Stain application procedures / Tips

  • We set out drop clothe or plastic to protect the work area / floors, furnishings and the like

  • We set the temperature in the room between 70 and 75 degrees F. if working on the inside of a home. It should not be too cold or too hot or the stain’s drying time will be affected.

  • We prep and sand the wood smooth and vacuum or brush off debris. Oil-based stains in particular will look patchy if the wood isn’t smooth.

  • We wet the wood (with compatible stain cleaners) slightly help the stain spread more evenly. some stains recommend the use of wood conditioner to eliminate broaching.

  • We apply stain evenly with a clean rag or paintbrush. Brushes are better for staining ornate carvings, molding and other irregularly shaped areas. Rags hold more stain and are easier to use on flat surfaces.

  • Sometimes we may use a spray gun especially when apply quick-drying alcohol-based stains (or dip the object in a stain bath for 5 minutes to help reach fine details).

  • We will wipe off excess stain with lint free clothe /paper towel

  • We allow the stain to dry and then apply another coat if there are patchy areas.

  • Once the stain is completely dry, we apply the varnish, shellac or wood polish accordingly to preserve the stain
